How I Went From Agnostic To Black Mormon

I have been an agnostic for most of my young adult years; for me, it seemed logical, and I was okay with that. I went to the Baptist Church and Sunday school when I was younger, but that didn’t stick, nor did any of the lessons.

My First Encounter with Two LDS Missionaries

A few years ago, I was a student at Central State University, where I initially met two well-dressed young men who introduced themselves as Latter-day Saint missionaries. I thought it was strange that they had come to Ohio’s only public historically Black college and university, or HBCU, to talk about Jesus Christ.

After complimenting me on my sense of style, they asked me if I wanted to join them in learning more about the Lord. “Sure. Why not?” I said, adding, “Come follow me,” as I knew the perfect place for such an occasion.

When we arrived at the location, they spoke of the Book of Mormon: I thought it was strange that I had never heard of it before. I invited them back, but after the second visit, it wouldn’t be another couple of years later when I would come across two young and well-dressed missionary men again.

Knowing for Myself

One day, I received a prompting from the Holy Spirit to ask Him what I wanted after I had been told so many things by those who consider themselves to be believers, and I had searched high and low while I wondered what to believe. Of course, there’s only one way, so I decided to pray. It was the first time I had prayed in years, and to my surprise, I received an immediate answer from God.

I requested a missionary visit since I wanted answers to life’s questions. I met in person with two former The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionaries, Elder Barnes and Elder Watkins, and I was able to find comfort in talking to them over a couple of months. They also helped me find peace through prayer, mainly after they read Moroni 10:4 to me as the Holy Ghost visited me shortly after.

Converting to the Faith

Finally, on August 4, 2018, I entered the waters of baptism five years after initially meeting the missionaries on campus at Central State. My life changed by talking with the missionaries from the Church.

I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true.
